Case against Qasim re-submitted to court

State has re-submitted the three charges previously withdrawn against Leader of Jumhoory Party, Qasim Ibrahim, to Criminal Court.

Prosecutor General’s Office issued a statement this Wednesday announcing the re-submission.

The statement said Qasim was being pressed with three charges for what he said during his speech at JP headquarters the day before the previously scheduled no-confidence vote against Speaker of People’s Majlis, Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed on March 27.

PG’s Office said that during the speech, Qasim said he would guarantee the tickets of any parliamentarian who voted to oust Maseeh, and assist them in any way possible.

Qasim has been charged with exuding influence over official duties, exuding influence over a voter and offering bribery.

Criminal Court’s Registrar reported that the case was rejected by the court when State prosecutors failed to show up for the hearing scheduled for July 10. However, PG’s Office says the court rejected the case after the office requested the hearing be rescheduled to July 11.

The lead judge appointed for the case, Chief Judge of Criminal Court, Abdul Baaree Yoosuf has now been transferred to Juvenile Court.
