Flooding causes damage in Fonadhoo, Vilingili

Torrential rain in the country has caused flood damage to homes in L. Fonadhoo and G. A. Vilingili.

President of Fonadhoo Council, Ahmed Riyaz reports the island was hit with heavy rain for three hours from 9:15 pm onwards last Saturday. Riyaz reports the rain caused flood damage to 10 homes. He said though flooding damaged a bedroom in one home and the roof of another, the damages were relatively minor.

“And there was damage to trees. The police and the Council worked on stacking sacks of sand in homes affected by flooding. Many on the island took preventive measures, even those unaffected by flooding,” said Riyaz.

The rain also caused flooding in G. A. Vilingili.

Vice President of Vilingili Council, Mazeedh Abdulla reports it has been raining in the island non-stop since 10 pm last Saturday night.

“The entire island is flooded. There’s no major damage though,” said Mazeedh.

Mazeedh said flooding has caused sewers in two-thirds of the homes in Vilingili to overflow, and damaged household items in many of the homes.

The current rainy weather plaguing the country is due to the Hulhangu Monsoon (South West Monsoon). It is currently Funoas Nakaiy – meaning strong winds and rough seas. Funoas Nakaiy starts on July 1 and will continue until July 14.

Director of Maldives Meteorological Service, Ahmed Rasheed said the center forecasted heavy rain and thunderstorms for the southern atolls – starting from L. Atoll.

Ahmed Rasheed said the weather in northern atolls was forecasted to be good, overall, despite a few scattered rain showers.
