Abdulla Falah Shareef has been elected the first Mayor of Fuvahmulah City.
Falah had previously served as President of Fuvahmulah Atoll Council, he was elected to the South-Fuvahmulah seat during Local Council Election 2017.
He was elected the Mayor of Fuvahmulah City by the unanimous vote of three council members after they were sworn in as members of Fuvahmulah City Council in a function this Saturday.
Falah is a candidate of the opposition party – Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Fellow MDP candidate – Mohamed Shirar – who won the Central-Fuvahmulah seat was elected the Deputy Mayor. Shirar had previously served as President of Fuvammulah Atoll Miskiymagu Council.
The third member of Fuvahmulah City Council is ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidate Hamad Abdulla. He won the North-Fuvahmulah seat.
President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, this Saturday, established the Fuvahmulah City Council and abolished all the previous councils on the island.
The decision follows the change in the island’s status to a “city” on September 22, 2016.
