President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has established the Fuvahmulah City Council, following the declaration of the island’s city status.
Following the decision, President Yameen has also abolished the former councils and their respective secretariats of the island as its terms have expired.
Fuvahmulah City – with its population of 15,000 people – previously had nine councils – including the Fuvahmulah Atoll Council.
They are:
1. Fuvammulah Atoll Council
2. Fuvammulah Atoll Dhadimagu Council
3. Fuvammulah Atoll Dhiguvaadu Council
4. Fuvammulah Atoll Hoadhadu Council
5. Fuvammulah Atoll Maadhadu Council
6. Fuvammulah Atoll Miskiymagu Council
7. Fuvammulah Atoll Funaadu Council
8. Fuvammulah Atoll Male’gan Council
9. Fuvammulah Atoll Dhoodigan Council
Decentralization Act empowers the President with the right to decide the jurisdiction of each council, as well as the authority and responsibilities of each council.
Fuvahmulah was given a city status on September 22, 2016.
The Fuvahmulah City Council has three councilors – elected during Local Council Election 2017.
