Court withdraws conditions for Qasim’s release

Criminal Court has withdrawn the conditions it placed on Jumhoory Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim when the court authorized his release from police detention.

Qasim was sent a document signed by Chief Judge of Criminal Court, Abdul Baaree Yoosuf this Wednesday, which states that all conditions placed on Qasim for his release have been withdrawn.

The document says that the conditions were placed on Qasim because the police, during the last remand hearing held for him, said that the second case against Qasim hadn’t been sent to Prosecutor General’s Office.

The document says that Maldives Police Service sent a letter to Criminal Court last Tuesday in which the authority apologized and said the statement made in court was misinformed, and that the court was therefore withdrawing all conditions placed on Qasim for his release.

Prosecutor General’s Office had made the decision not to pursue the second case against Qasim sent by Maldives Police Service due to lack of sufficient evidence.

Conditions placed on Qasim had included a travel ban.
