Three candidates who applied for seats at Kuribee Council have gone through to second round of voting after all three received equal number of votes during Local Council Election held on May 6.
Interim results released by Elections Commission show two Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidates secured two seats at Kuribee Council. PPM candidate Abdul Fattah Abu Bakr won his seat with 242 votes and a second PPM candidate secured the second seat with 229 votes.
Meanwhile two candidates from Maldivian Democratic Party and one more candidate from PPM all received 218 votes – requiring that they face off against each other in a second round of voting for the third seat at Kuribee Council.
One of the two MDP candidates is Ahmed Mujuthaba – who is the current President of Kuribee Council. The second MDP candidate is Mohamed Shaafy, and the third candidate is Ismail Asif from PPM.
A third MDP candidate who competed for a seat at the council – Mariyam Jawad lost the election after securing a slightly less 202 votes.
The previous Kuribee Council was dominated by MDP with four MDP candidates and one PPM candidate.
