No Ramadan allowance to civil servants on paid or non-pay leave

Government has made the decision not to provide Ramadan allowance to civil servants on pay-leave or non-pay leave from work by the beginning of the month of Ramadan.

Ministry of Finance and Treasury sent a circular to government offices last Tuesday, May 9, announcing that civil servants will receive their Ramadan allowance along with their salary for the month of May.

Law dictates that every Maldivian employed must receive MVR 3,000 as Ramadan allowance for the month of Ramadan.

It has been the government’s practice not to provide Ramadan allowance to civil servants who are on pay-leave or non-pay leave from work during Ramadan. However, civil servants who had rejoined work during the month of Ramadan were provided percentage of the Ramadan allowance due based on the number of days of Ramadan they will be working.

The month of Ramadan this year is set to begin on May 27.
