Secretary General of former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s faction of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Abdul Aleem has been found guilty of contempt of court, and fined MVR 85,000 for the offense.
Aleem was charged with contempt of court for non-compliance with a previous Civil Court ruling and taking actions in violation of the court ruling.
The charge against him read that the issue was “non-compliance with a previous court ruling regarding PPM and running a council and an ethics committee in the name of PPM and terminating members from PPM in violation of the ruling; thereby believing court rulings need not be followed by the people.”
Aleem said the Civil Court found his guilty based on his statements and comments made via the social media application “Viber” which the court believed clearly proved Vilimale’ MP Ahmed
Nihan Hussain Manik and Dhangethi MP Ilham Ahmed were terminated from the party by Maumoon’s faction.
Aleem’s case was reviewed by a bench of five judges; Chief Judge Abdulla Ali, Judge Mohamed Haleem, Judge Hassan Fahmy Ibrahim, Judge Ali Naseer and Judge Ali Abdulla.
