MVR 1,000 comes 2nd in IBNS Banknote of the Year award

The Maldivian 1,000 Rufiya note has come runner-up in the Banknote of the Year award by International Bank Note Society (IBNS) for 2016.

The MVR 1,000 note is blue in color and has the underprint of spot and striped pattern on the skin of whale sharks, manta rays, green turtle, corals and a luxury resort.

The MVR 1,000 note is part of the “Minivan Fansaas” note series introduced by Maldives Monetary Authority in December, 2015 to celebrate 50 years of independence to the country.

IBNS reports almost 120 new banknotes were released worldwide in 2016; half of which were eligible to compete for the award.

The Banknote of the Year award for 2016 went to the Swiss 50 Franc hybrid note; with the MVR

1,000 note, Argentina’s 500 Peso jaguar note and Royal Bank of Scotland’s 5 Pound note coming close seconds.
