A State witness has testified to seeing a newborn infant being buried in Maradhoo, Addu City.
The testimony was provided this Tuesday during trial of Aminath Shahee Alim and her husband Ibrahim Wisam from Maradhoo – who are charged with homicide for using a drug to induce a miscarriage, failing to consult a doctor and burying their newborn infant on December 12, 2012.
Two anonymous State witnesses provided their testimony during this Tuesday’s hearing.
The first witness testified to meeting Shahee and Wisam on the street on December 12, 2012 and said that they had seemed scared and sad at the time.
The witness testified to seeing Wisam again that day. The witness said Wisam took out the infant wrapped in a blue plastic bag covered over with a black paper bag from under the seat of his motorcycle. The witness said Wisam then took out the black plastic bag and buried the infant – still in the blue plastic bag.
The witness said there was blood on the bag, and no movement from the infant.
The witness said Wisam confessed the infant was his.
“Wisam himself said the infant was his. When I asked him why he was burying the infant, he said his wife miscarried,” testified the witness.
The second witness testified to seeing torch light from the beach and going there to investigate.
The witness testified to hearing, but not seeing the infant being buried.
The witness testified there were two people there – one of whom he knew.
The witness said he later asked the person what they were doing, and that the person shared what they were doing with him.
“When I met the person I knew after that; I was told Wisam buried his child. And that the child was male,” said the second witness.
The second witness said the person told him the infant’s finger had been moving when he was buried.
The witness said he had been present in the area when the police went to investigate the scene of the crime, but that he had not followed the police to the scene.
Wisam had denied he was at the scene of the crime during the time in question, submitting the name of witness as an alibi.
However, the court decided not to accept the witness as the alibi was not provided to police during investigation.
The case is being presided over by Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdul Baaree Yoosuf who said the court will be hearing more testimony from State witnesses during the next hearing.
