Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) reports a new lightweight MVR 2 coin to replace the ones currently in use will be released this year.
Spokesperson for MMA, Mansoor Zubair reported to “Sun” this Tuesday that the new MVR 2 coin will be released and made usage within this year.
“The MVR 2 coin will be released this year. But the date hasn’t been finalized yet,” said Mansoor.
MMA says the new coins will be lighter.
“MMA doesn’t want the coins to be heavy. MMA wants the MVR 2 coin to be light too,” said
Mansoor. “We have the stock of MVR 1. So we usually issue MVR 1 coins.”
Meanwhile, the new polymer MVR 5 notes are scheduled to be released in May.
