Male’ City councilman Zaidul Ameen plead “not guilty” to all three charges pressed on him by the State during hearing held at Criminal Court this Tuesday morning.
State has charged Zaidul Ameen with attempted irregular dissemination of information, acquirement of information through irregular means, and obstruction of due process.
Criminal Court ordered this Tuesday that Zaidul Ameen be kept in police custody pending outcome of the trial.
During the hearing – which was held behind closed doors – State prosecution accused Zaidul Ameen of listening in on and recording a conversation by a judge, making a video for the recording and attempting to sell it.
He has been charged with attempted irregular dissemination of information in reference to Article 232 of Penal Code; acquirement of information through irregular means in reference to Article 233 of Penal Code; and obstruction of due process in reference to Article 533 of Penal Code.
Zaidul Ameen faces a maximum sentence of three years in prison if he is found guilty of all three charges.
Each charge carries a minimum four-month and 24-day prison sentence.
Zaidul Ameen’s lawyer, Mahfooz Saeed reports the next hearing in the trial will be held at 8:30 pm on May 2.
Zaidul Ameen was arrested by authorities on January 13. He was remand police custody nine times and transferred to house arrest two times.
