Qasim to remain free pending outcome of trial

Criminal Court rejects State’s motion to keep Leader of Jumhoory Party, Maamingili MP Qasim Ibrahim under police custody pending the outcome of trial.

State has charged Qasim with attempted bribery, using influence in executing responsibilities of an official position and attempting to influence a voter.

During the closed hearing in the trial held this Thursday, State moved to request that Qasim be kept under police custody pending the outcome of the trial. But the request was rejected by the judge.

Speaking to press outside Criminal Court after the hearing, Qasim praised judges and police officers.

He said he witnessed the success if their work today, and was happy for it.

During the hearing, Qasim pled “not guilty” to all three charges read by the State.

The court has awarded Qasim seven days to respond to the charges, scheduling the next hearing for April 23.

Qasim was charged with attempted bribery in reference to Article 510 of the Penal Code – an offense which carries a maximum sentence of eight years in prison.

He said charged with using influence in executing responsibilities of an official position in reference to Article 511 of Penal Code and charged with attempting to influence a voter in reference to Article 540 of Penal Code.

The two offenses carry a maximum sentence of four years in prison.

Qasim’s lawyer, Hisaan Hassan was originally barred from entrance to the courthouse due to some comments she made, but was allowed entrance later after she apologized.
