Committee passes to reduce members from LGA Board

Parliament Committee has passed to reduce the number of members on the Board of the Local Government Agency (LGA).

The committee passed to reduce the number of members on the LGA Board down to nine to five, and for all five members to be nominated by the President and approved by People’s Majlis according to the report from the national security committee.

The five members in the Board will be; one Cabinet minister, a female expert in gender equality, member of a civil society, an expert in governance or public administration and a chief executive officer.

But some of the current members on the LGA Board were directly selected by the Parliament.

Conditions to be met to be on the LGA Board: That being a Maldivian over the age of 25 without a criminal offense in Islam in the past five years.

The committee report said that the current board will be void from the moment the amendment makes it to the state gazette once it’s passed.

The law currently dictates that LGA’s Board be comprised of one Cabinet minister assigned by the President, one Male’ City councilor, four atoll councilors, a civil society member, one ordinary member and one city councilor.

LGA is a governing body which oversees the work of councils and compliance with laws and regulations.
