Three charges brought forth against Qasim

The state has brought forth three charges against the Leader of Jumhooree Party, Qasim Ibrahim and sent them to the Criminal Court.

The charges against the JP Leader are, offering bribes charged under Article 510 of the penal code, if convicted, carries a maximum sentence of eight years in prison.

Qasim is also being charged of influencing official procedures under Article 511 and influencing votes under 540. If convicted, the JP Leader is facing a maximum sentence of four years in prison.

If he is convicted of any of these crimes, Qasim may lose his seat in the Parliament as the MP for Maamigili constituency.

Initially, the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG Office) rejected the case against Qasim. It is unclear when the case was sent to the PG Office for the second time.

The Jumhooree Party Leader is currently in the custody of the Maldives Police Service at the Dhoonidhoo detention center. Police suspects Qasim of influencing the no-confidence vote against the Speaker of the Parliament, Abdulla Maseeh.
