Opposition party, MDP, has called for the resignation of the members on the BroadCasting Commission (BroadCom) claiming that the huge fine against Raajje TV came unjustly.
BroadCom fined the TV station, Raajje TV, today with MVR 1 million saying that they broadcasted defamatory content against President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
A statement issued by MDP today regarding the case looked into with initiative from the BroadCom said that Rajje TV was fined to achieve a political motive.
And the Commission fining media stations claiming defamatory content against the President is a violation of the regulation of free and fair media and the rights of the media.
Raising concerns from the party regarding the actions of the BroadCom to impede on the fourth power of the democracy, journalism, with disregard to the responsibilities placed on them by the Constitution, MDP said that the actions of BroadCom today are in direct violation of the Constitution.
Rajje TV was fined with MVR 1 million after looking into the case by the BroadCom regarding defamatory content against the President during the coverage of an event by the Maldives United Opposition on the night of 26 October 2016.
