Qasim Ibrahim has been arrested

Maldives Police Service has entered the residence of the Jumhooree Party Leader, Qasim Ibrahim with a court order and arrested him.

Police said that Qasim was arrested in suspicion of bribing MPs in the no confidence vote against the Speaker of the Parliament, Abdulla Maseeh, and in suspicion of attempting to influence the no confidence motion pending against the Deputy Speaker.

The reasons for the arrest in the court order signed by the Criminal Court Judge, Abdul Baree Yoosuf are:

- Suspicion of bribing MPs to influence the outcome of the no confidence vote against Speaker, Abdulla Maseeh

- Suspicion of attempting bribes to MPs to influence the outcome of the no confidence vote pending against Deputy Speaker, Moosa Manik

- Suspicion of working to influence security forces of the state

- Suspicion of working to overthrow the constitutional government formed in the country with the means outside the law

- Influencing evidence and hiding evidence in relation to the case

- And being deemed a danger to national security

The police are currently investigating the bribery suspicions against Qasim and his passport has been suspended as well.

Qasim has now been transported to the investigation jail in Dhoonidhoo.
