2 found guilty of smuggling 24 kilo narcotics, sentenced to life

Two Maldivian men have been sentenced to life imprisonment and fined MVR 100,000 each after they were found guilty of collaborating with some foreigners and smuggling 24 kilos of narcotics into Maldives on an Iranian ship.

The guilty verdict was issued against Abdulla Sofwath from H. Ever Peace in Male’ City and Ismail Moosa from G. Trust Home in Male’ City by Criminal Court this Monday.

Criminal Court ruled that evidence provided by the State proved Abdulla Sofwath and Ismail

Moosa were guilty.

They have been ordered to pay the fine to the court within one month.

Abdulla Sofwath and Ismail Moosa were charged with smuggling in 24 kilos of narcotics into Maldives inside a dinghy on an Iranian ship at approximately 9:30 pm, on March 10, 2014.

The men who collected the narcotics from the Iranian ship from 30 nautical miles outside A. A. Mathiveri were arrested as they harbored at Hulhumale’ carrying the dinghy containing the narcotics shipment on another boat.
