An exploding electrical power transformer kept on the street by Male' Water and Sewerage Company affected a high voltage cable by State Electric Company resulting in a water and power outage throughout Male’ City on Sunday afternoon.
Water and electricity was cut off at approximately 1 p.m.
Bystanders reported hearing a loud “bang” from MWSC before the outage.
An official from MWSC who spoke to Sun Media said the “bang” heard was due to its electrical power transformer located on the street in the eastern side of the building exploding.
The power outage has also affected the state institutes along with the telephone and internet services.
Water services have resumed, but MWSC warns it may be some time before water can be provided at high-pressure.
Assistant Director of STELCO, Abdulla Naazir initially said that the power went out after a voltage cable “broke” and the time it would take to repair and restore power is unclear.
But now the power has been restored across the city except in the MWSC main building area. The issue occurred in the transformer located on the road east of the MWSC building.
Although the power outage interrupted the water supply as well, it has now been restored.
