Migrant workers with valid work visas can now travel abroad from Gan International Airport in Addu City – located in the south.
It was in December, 2016 that SriLankan Airlines started scheduled flight operations between Gan International Airport and Colombo – which marked the first time for scheduled international flight operations to start in Addu City.
However, only Maldivians and tourists were allowed the service; leaving migrant workers in the south with the inconvenience of having to travel to Male’ City if they wanted to travel back to their home country.
“Sun” is privy to information that SriLankan Airlines even considered grounding its operations until the issue was resolved.
Maldives Immigration reports that arrangements have now been made to allow migrant workers to use the airport to travel abroad.
“Migrant workers with work visas can travel in and out of Maldives from Gan airport, starting today,” said Spokesperson for Maldives Immigration, Hassan Khaleel this Tuesday.
Khaleel noted that foreigners who request new work visas will still need to travel into the country from Velana International Airport.
