Two foreigners to serve life in prison for 9 kg drug smuggle

Two Indian nationals who smuggled over 9 kilograms of drugs in to the Maldives with the league with some locals four years ago has been sentenced to life in prison by the Criminal Court.

On 27 November 2012, the two men were arrested on a wooden ship, “Silver Cloud”, that entered into the Maldives coming from Tuticorin, India.

A total of eight Indian nationals and two Maldivians were arrested in relation to the case but only a few of them were convicted of the crime.

The two Indian nationals convicted today are Silver Preethifan and S. Maria Anthony.

Verdict from the Criminal Court said that Silver Preethifan confessed to drug smuggling and the second person was convicted under the Maldivian law to prevent illegal drug smuggling for his involvement in the crime.

The drugs they smuggled were thrown over the MPL wall where a group of locals where waiting to receive them.
