Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has brought in new vehicles specially designed for waste collection.
The new vehicles are ten compact trucks of 2.5 MT and 20 tricycles capable of carry 250 kilograms of waste.
The vehicles would be used in the waste disposal operation in Malé City. And so the tricycles would be used to collect waste from the residential homes in small roads.
Speaking at a special ceremony today, the Chairman of WAMCO, Ali Khalid said that since it’s inception 18 months ago, WAMCO has proven that Maldivian companies are capable of doing things. And so in addition to the vehicles brought in today, ten dump trucks would also be brought in in the future according to the WAMCO Chair.
He said that the waste collection in the capital city would be starting in separate zones.
The Minister of Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim also spoke at the ceremony today saying that the vehicles brought in by WAMCO would make the capital a clean city and make waste management easier.
Minister Thoriq said that a law would be formed and implemented in June so that waste has to be carried so that the smell won’t be escape and waste would not be littered on the roads.
MPs and Deputy Ministers at the Environment Ministry were in attendance at the ceremony today along with senior officials of WAMCO.
