Construction of water and sewerage system in Hulhudhuffaaru begins

Construction of the water and sewerage system in R. Hulhudhuffaaru has been launched by Minister of Environment and Energy, Toriq Ibrahim.

The water and sewerage system in Hulhudhuffaaru is a MVR 57 million project funded Maldivian government and loan aid by OPEC Fund for International Development.

It was contracted to Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) in May, 2016.

The project includes a 6.8-kilometer-long water system, two 60-ton desalination plants, and 520-tons of storage.

It also includes a 250-ton sewage treatment plant – which’s capacity will be increased to 500-tons in the future.

Construction of the water and sewerage system is scheduled to be complete in December, 2017.

Speaking during the function held to inaugurate construction of the water and sewerage system on Tuesday, Minister Toriq said that President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration has so far established sewage treatment systems in 18 islands and water treatment systems in 15 islands over the last three years.

He said that construction of sewerage systems in 21 more islands and water systems in 12 more islands was ongoing at the moment.

Minister Toriq said that the projects were proof of President Yameen’s love for the Maldivian people. And appealed to the people to increase cooperation with the government in order to complete the projects at a faster rate.
