Parents from Dh. Hulhudheli - protesting that the building which houses the island’s school poses a safety hazard for their children – have locked the building.
President of Hulhudheli Council, Adam Zahir reported to “Sun” that parents were unhappy with the management and teachers of the school, and refused to send their children to school this Wednesday.
Zahir said that the ceiling and the outer wall of the school were damaged, and that the school’s toilets were out of service.
He said the school was also riddled with electricity issues.
Zahir said the issue had been discussed on numerous occasions with officials from Ministry of Education, as well as the Minister of Education herself. But that nothing had come out of it.
“Ministry says it has issued permit to carry out the work. But the work hasn’t been done. Education Ministry has not checked to see if it’s being carried out, either,” he said.
The Principal of Kudahuvadhoo School was sent to Hulhudheli to address the grievances of the parents on behalf of Ministry of Education.
However, the parents have refused to meet him, and have demanded a team from Ministry of Education got to Hulhudheli to discuss the issue.
Zahir said it was questionable whether the parents will be allowing the children to go to school tomorrow either.
