Local Council Election postponed again, by a week

Elections Commission has announced the Local Council Election – re-scheduled to April 8 following the Civil Court ruling – has now been postponed to April 15.

The one-week postponement is due to unavailability of school premises to establish voting centers in.

During the press conference held this Wednesday morning to announce the postponement,

Vice President of EC, Amjad Mustafa said it was also Ministry of Education’s request that the election be postponed.

Member of EC, Ahmed Akram said that the decision to postpone the election was made after discussion by national advisory committee on elections.

He said the committee meeting was attended by all political parties, except for the main opposition party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

“I want to note the date of the election was changed with the unanimous vote of all members of the national advisory committee,” said Akram.

The postponement in election will require changes to the voters’ list to accommodate people who become 18 years of age by April 15.
