A private company, Media Connect, has started Internet Protocol television (IPTV) services in Maldives for the first time, launching its services in Th. Vilufushi.
Managing Director of Media Connect, Ibrahim Hilmy reported to “Sun” this Saturday that the service had been met with huge demand from Vilufushi.
IPTV is the delivery of television content using signals based on the logical Internet protocol (IP), rather than through traditional terrestrial, satellite signal, and cable television formats.
One of the most popular services of IPTV is Video on Demand, which allow users to select and watch video content such as movies and TV shows when they choose to, rather than having to watch at a specific broadcast time.
IPTV also allows users in one place to play video games with users in another place using a software which needs to be uploaded into the server and setup.
Hilmy said that Media Connect currently only provided Video on Demand, but planned to provide additional IPTV services.
He said the company currently had clients in 170 households in Vilufushi, with the number expanding.
