HPA warns of spike in dengue cases

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued a health alert asking for extra precautions following a spike in number of dengue cases in Maldives.

HPA reported that 1,962 cases of dengue fever have been reported over the last one-year period, which is a four percent increase compared to 2015.

The agency has advised extra precautions, including destroying all possible mosquito breeding grounds.

Preventive measures against dengue:

• Avoid throwing rubbish on streets, yards, and out air vents

• Cover body with clothes

• Use mosquito-repellants

• Close all doors and windows at dawn and sunset to prevent mosquitos from getting in

Measures to take when struck with fever:

• Increase fluid intake

• Rest

• Avoid using medicine other than paracetamol

• Consult a doctor if the fever persists for more than three days

HPA reported that its officials will be providing instructions on dengue and preventive measures against the virus, and well as surveying for mosquito breeding grounds in the atolls.
