Alleged rapist in Vilimale’ 2012 rape case walks free

Mohamed Abdul Shukoor from G. Redcoral in Male’ City – charged by State of raping a 16-year-old girl in Vilimale’ in 2012 – has walked free after Criminal Court ruled there wasn’t sufficient evidence to convict him.

The girl was raped on December 29, 2012.

She told the police she had been walking on a street with her younger brother when she was dragged into a house and raped. The younger brother had been kept inside another room while she was raped.

The girl named Mohamed Abdul Shukoor as her rapist, but the defendant maintained his innocence throughout the trial.

Criminal Court made its decision last week, ruling State prosecution failed to produce sufficient evidence as required by the law on sexual predators of minors to prove Mohamed Abdul Shukoor carried out the crime.
