Narcotics found inside cake meant for Maafushi inmate

Maldives Correctional Service has seized narcotics hidden inside a cake brought during a family visit to an inmate at Maafushi Prison.

The attempt to smuggle in the narcotics was made by a woman who went to Maafushi Prison to visit her brother.

MCS expressed concern over the spike in attempts to smuggle in contraband items to the prison.

It noted that a family member visiting an inmate attempted to smuggle in a smartphone, charger, a cheaper mobile phone, battery and a SIM card within items brought in for an inmate in December.

MCS said that smuggling in contraband items was a huge challenge to reforming and rehabilitating the inmates.

The authority appealed to inmates, families and the general public to stop such attempts.
