State prosecution was unable to address the questions posed on behalf of popular singer Hawwa Ashra - from Finimaage, R. Meedhoo - who protested that the drug trafficking charge against her was unclear.
Ashra and her boyfriend – Hassan Nazeeh from G. Jootheege in Male’ City – were charged with drug trafficking after police discovered narcotics inside Nazeeh’s bedroom in a raid.
When asked to address the charge against Ashra during the hearing at Criminal Court this Monday, Ashra’s lawyer said that the charge was unclear as Ashra had been charged with drug trafficking, but was arrested on suspicion of consumption of narcotics.
The lawyer noted that Ashra was released from police custody after her drug screen came back negative; and that Ashra cannot be charged for an allegation that is not under investigation.
He said that the charge against Ashra had no mention of allegation she had consumed narcotics.
State prosecutor said that the questions posed on behalf of Ashra would be addressed during the next hearing. He said that the investigators in the case would be questioned and that it would submit the court order in order to clear what and what the police investigated.
Judge Adam Arif, who is presiding over the case, said that the defendant can only address the charge against her if the allegation against her is clear.
Ashra’s lawyer also questioned how the bedroom from which the narcotics was found was connected to Ashra.
The lawyer said that the narcotics were found from Nazeeh’s bedroom, and that the singer did not have to bear responsibility over it. He said that there was nothing which connected Ashra to the bedroom.
State prosecution said that the bedroom had items of clothing belonging to Ashra, and that the singer had been there when police raided the bedroom.
