Minister of Environment and Energy, Toriq Ibrahim has announced construction of green energy systems will begin in every Maldivian country in 2017.
Minister Toriq made the announcement during function held at STELCO this Tuesday to unveil the “Energy Policy and Strategy” and “Land Electricity Data Book”.
Minister Toriq said that Maldives was heavily dependent on fuel, and that cutting down expenditure on fuel would free funds, which can instead be used to invest in other projects.
Minister Toriq announced it was the target of Maldivian government to ensure 30 percent of electricity usage by every inhabited Maldivian island is fueled via green energy by end of 2018.
He said that great progress was being made on that front; with the 1.6 megawatt green energy system under construction in Addu City, green energy systems in five more islands scheduled to go operational in the first quarter of 2017, and green energy projects in every inhabited island of H. A. Atoll and H. Dh. Atoll which has been opened for tender.
“STELCO and Fenaka Corporation is doing the tender work and information collection for the documentation needed in order to establish green energy systems in every inhabited island of
Maldives. Tendering needed to establish the renewable energy systems will be done within the next year,” said Minister Toriq.
Minister Toriq said that 24-hour electricity in every inhabited island has been established as per the policy of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s government. He said that synchronized panel systems were being installed in every island to upgrade the service – and manage expenditure on the electricity generated, cut costs, and increase efficiency of maintenance.
He said a bill will be submitted to People’s Majlis to acquire resources which will cut down the cost of electricity as much as possible.
The bill will be sent to Attorney General’s Office during the first quarter of 2017, said Minister Toriq.
