Telecom company, Dhiraagu has handed over the empty plastic bottles collected after its Road Race event to Parley for the Oceans for recycling.
Dhiraagu announced last Monday that the scores of empty plastic water bottles thrown on the streets of Hulhumale’ by participants of the Dhiraagu Road Race on November 11 had been collected and handed over to Biodiversity Education and Awareness Maldives (BEAM) so it can be delivered for recycling to the international organization which works for protection of the earth’s oceans, Parley.
BEAM is a local organization which sends plastic waste collected from Maldives to the German designing company, Adidas.
The organization has an agreement standing with the biggest guesthouse business in K. Maafushi, Kaani Hotel, to recycle used plastic bottles.
Dhiraagu has been running a series of environment awareness and protection programs as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.
This includes its “For the Oceans” campaign launched on October 16 to encourage reusable bags as a substitute for disposable plastic bags.
The company has banned plastic mineral water bottles from the office, installing water coolers and gifting the staff with reusable water bottles.
It has also run awareness campaigns for its staff and schoolchildren to educate them on the damage from plastic bags, introducing reusable shopping bags.
Parley for the Oceans, in collaboration with Adidas has launched limited edition Adidas x Parley running shoes – made from plastic waste collected from the Maldivian waters.
