Health Center in A. Dh. Dhangethi has been operating without a doctor for over a week.
Aishath Hussain, in charge of running Dhangethi Health Center, reported that the center had been operating without a doctor since its sole doctor left the center on December 5.
“We sent the doctor to Male’ after he requested it, to treat a toothache. But then he e-mailed to the office email account one day later, saying he was leaving the country,” said Aishath.
She said the doctor did not provide a reason for his decision to leave the country.
Aishath said that all patients who come to Dhangethi Health Center were being treated, and that there was no interruption to its health services.
“No sick patients are being turned away. We have been providing the services through health workers with the doctor away,” said Aishath.
Ministry of Health reported that the Pakistani doctor who worked at Dhangethi Health Center left over an “issue”. And that a new doctor had been hired, who will arrive in Dhangethi within a week’s time.
Dhangethi Council reports that ambulance services on the island had also been interrupted due to lack of a driver to operate the vehicle.
The island of Dhangethi has a population of over 1,000 people.
