Criminal Court has set the verdict and sentencing hearing for the murder of Hussain Mohamed Manik (Huseynubey), Haa Alifu Hoarafushi, who was slayed six years ago.
The suspects charged are Ahmed Ibrahim, Nuuman Abdulla, and a nephew of the victim, Mohamed Latheef, all from Haa Alifu Hoarafushi.
While the closing statements of the case were presented on 16 November 2014, it is unclear why it took so long to deliver a verdict.
A hearing was held four months ago after which the Judge residning over the case, Judge Abdul Baree Yousuf said that a verdict would be delivered within a week. But that goal was never met.
The state charged all three suspects with terrorism accusing them of kidnapping the victim, binding him at an abandoned house and suffocating the victim by putting sand in his mouth. The state ruled the suffocation with the sand as the cause of death on the night of 27 September 2010.
The three suspects were also charged with theft for stealing over MVR 100,000 and over USD 1,000 along with EUR 20 GBP 11 and INR 10, from the residence of the victim on 27 September 2010 around 11 p.m.
During the trial, some witnesses presented by the prosecution said that some of the stolen money was found at places related to the suspects.
