Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has announced none of its member’s application for the Local Council Election had been submitted to Elections Commission (EC) by the deadline, December 1.
EC announced it had received more than 900 application forms for the Local Council Election by December 1. And said it did not consider re-opening the application process for a second time.
Civil Court has granted PPM’s request for a two-month postponement to the Council Election – originally scheduled for January 14. EC has filed for appeal for the decision.
Speaking during the PPM press conference held this Thursday morning, Deputy Leader of PPM, Funadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla said that it had gone to the court for a postponement to the election in the first place because they didn’t have sufficient party documents to prepare for the election.
Abdul Raheem said EC needed to honor the court order and provide PPM with more time to submit their candidates for the election.
“If the opportunity isn’t provided, there is no point in postponing the election,” said Abdul Raheem.
He said that PPM would hold primaries where necessary, but had not decided on a date yet.
