Minister: Culture of mistreatment of inmates has been abolished

Minister of Home Affairs, Ahmed Azleen has commented that inmates in Maldivian prisons were no longer mistreated, and that inmates suffered no punishment other than being kept in isolation.

Speaking during the function held this Thursday to mark Human Rights Day, Minister Azleen said that there was no country which provided more protection of human rights than Maldives.

“What I have to say to those who question the condition of Maldivian prisons and relay information regarding condition of Maldivian prisons to the outside world is, to stop spread of unfounded allegations to ruin the reputation of Maldives. That there is no country today which provides more protection of human rights than Maldives,” said Azleen.

Minister Azleen said that inmates in Maldivian prisons were well cared for. And were offered education and training programs the same standard as a college or school.

He said that inmates were offered education and food menus – with the standard of food provided monitored on a daily basis. He questioned how many people remarked on positive aspects such as that.

Minister Azleen conveyed confidence that no mistreatment was taking place in any Maldivian prison.

“Today, during this important function, I guarantee you all that no mistreatment is taking place against any inmate who is serving a sentence over any offense. There’s no longer any culture of abuse in Maldives,” he said.

Minister Azleen also said that authorities were working non-stop to stop human trafficking, to ensure that the crime is abolished from the country.
