EC postpones draw to order names of Local Election contestants

Elections Commission (EC) has postponed the draw to order names of candidates participating in the Local Council Election.

The draw was previously scheduled to be held this Tuesday.

EC issued a statement on Monday, to announce the postponement. It said a date for the draw would be announced later.

Civil Court has ordered that the Local Council Election – scheduled to be held on January 14 – be postponed by two months to allow more time for the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) to hold its primary and prepare for the election.

EC has appealed the postponement with High Court.
