Tourist arrivals in October rises 11 percent

Economic review issued by Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) shows an 11 percent rise in tourist arrivals in October, 2016, compared to the month of October, 2015.

Economic review shows 117,489 tourists visited Maldives in October, which is an 11 percent increase compared to tourist arrivals in October of 2015.

The statistics show a yearly, as well as monthly increase in tourist arrivals.

Total 101,909 tourists visited Maldives in September. And 15,580 more tourists visited Maldives in October than in September.

There was also a five percent increase in the number of nights spent in Maldives by tourists during the period.

The increase in tourist arrivals in October of 2016 compared to October in 2015 is due to increase in European tourists.

However, the statistics also show a drop in number of tourist arrivals in October from the biggest market – the Chinese tourist market – compared to October of 2015.

The occupancy rate in October went up compared to 2015 and stood at 74 percent, despite the increase in capacity.
