Abdulla Bagir Ahmed, owner of SBT Hajj and Umrah Group Private Limited, has been sentenced to three years, 2 months and 12 days in prison after he was found guilty of embezzling money from customers.
Bagir was convicted by Criminal Court last Thursday.
He was found guilty of embezzling a total of more than MVR 490,000 from 13 people from Addu City during the month of Ramadan in 1434 (Islamic Calendar) who wished to perform the umrah.
Criminal Court ruled that Bagir’s guilt in the crime was proven beyond reasonable doubt, based on his testimony in court and the evidence submitted by the State prosecution.
He was sentenced to prison based on Article 1002 (a) of the Penal Code.
Criminal Court cleared Bagir of two other charges of embezzlement pressed by the State during Thursday’s hearing.
He is already serving a one-year and seven-month prison sentence issued by Criminal Court in April, in a separate charge of embezzlement.
