People’s Majlis has voted on appointing Ungoofaaru MP Jaufar Dawood to the seat in Clemency Board dedicated to a member of People’s Majlis.
The nomination was passed with the vote of 69 lawmakers during the Majlis sitting this Thursday. No one voted against the nomination but six lawmakers cast blank votes.
MP Jaufar was nominated for the Clemency Board after the Majlis voted to remove previous member – Thulusdhoo MP Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim (Lawyer Wadde) over concerns regarding his attendance.
The motion to remove MP Wadde was submitted by Kelaa MP Ali Arif, who said that no one doubted his capability, but that his absence to 67 percent of Clemency Board meeting was a concern.
Wadde said that if attendance was the issue, it was better if People’s Majlis looked into the attendance of the President of Clemency Board, Attorney General Mohamed Anil.
He alleged that the move to remove him from Clemency Board was sparked by his criticism of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
