Ministry of Islamic Affairs has started distributing the zakat al-mal MVR 900 per head to the poor living in Male’, Hulhumale’ and Vilimale’.
Distribution of alms will continue from Islamic Center from November 21 to November 24.
According to Ministry of Islamic Affairs, distribution counters will be open from 9:30 am to 4 pm, except for a break from 11:45 am to 1 pm.
Ministry reports that total 100 tokens will be issued per day, and the people who come to collect the alms are required to wait in four queues; the express queue for those who bring 1 to 5 ID cards, the normal queue for people who bring 6 to 20 ID cards, a separate queue for those who bring more than 21 ID cards, and a separate queue for expectant mothers and those above 65 years of age.
Alms can only be taken for those who bring their own ID cards and/or well as ID cards of their spouses and ID cards and ID cards of their children below the age of 18 years.
Ministry said that the delay in distribution of this year’s alms was due to hurdles in verifying the list of those entitled to the money.
“The delay is distribution of this year’s zakat al-mal is because of measures we took to ensure that the zakat al-mal goes to those who are entitled to it. We ran a Trainers of Trainers program for that,” said Deputy Islamic Minister, Mohamed Mustafa during the press briefing held by the ministry.
Ministry reports that the list of those registered for alms had been cut down from 53,000 people to 12,335 people after verification.
The alms of MVR 900 per head is more than double the alms of MVR 400 per head distributed in 2015.
Distribution of alms in the atolls will be carried out by local councils.
