Police have started investigating the case of a foreign worker who attempted to allegedly sexually assault a Maldivian woman, and then was set upon by a mob of angry locals in A. A. Rasdhoo.
A police media official reported that a special team of police officers had been dispatched to Rasdhoo to investigate the case.
The foreigner had reportedly attempted to sexually assault the woman on November 1, and had then fled to the uninhabited island of Madivaru, which lies near Rasdhoo.
Police had gone to Madivaru to arrest the man after the incident was reported to them by the woman. However, the police speedboat had run into trouble and was beaten to it by a couple of locals who had gone to Madivaru on a dingy.
The locals brought the man back to Rasdhoo and a mob proceeded to beat the man.
The foreigner is now under arrest, and the police are working on arresting the locals involved in the attack.
