Binladin Group starts survey work to build new terminal

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) reports that the contractor hired to build the new international passenger terminal in Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, Saudi Binladin Group had started surveying the site.

Briefing press regarding the masterplan for INIA upgrade, Managing Director of MACL, Adil Moosa said that the design work on the new terminal – which is also being undertaken by Binladin Group – was nearly complete.

The project is estimated to cost USD 300 million.

The new international passenger terminal will be built to the south of the current international passenger terminal in use. Land has been reclaimed to build the terminal.

The area has been cleared of the bonded warehouses and MACL offices; with the bonded warehouses moved to Hulhumale’ and the MACL offices moved to the new building built to the north of Hulhule’.

Adil said Binladin Group had nearly completed the design work, and was now surveying the reclaimed land where the terminal is to be built.

“They are surveying now. The team has established itself now,” said Adil.

He said that it was expected to take three years for the terminal to be built and made usable.

“We are expecting it will take about three years for the whole terminal to be made functional.

The duration of the construction work hasn’t changed. But there is chance of a delay,” said Adil.

He said that the whole terminal was expected to be made functional by 2019, but that they were working on completing bulk of the project within 2018.

The new international passenger terminal will cover an 80,000 square foot area.

Once the new terminal is complete, the current international passenger terminal will be used as a domestic terminal.
