Maldives Meteorological Center (MET Office) has said 72 mm of rain fell down in Malé City alone in the past 15 hours as part of the heavy rains across the country.
An official from the MET Office said that from 6 a.m. this morning to 9 p.m., 71.9 mm of rain was observed in Malé City but it is not a record setting amount.
The official said that 100 mm of rain was observed in three hours as part of the South-west monsoon in the past. And on some days, more than that amount was recorded in 24 hours.
The heavy rain today in Malé City caused heavy flooding on a number of roads with waters up to a foot high disrupting foot and vehicular traffic. MNDF Fire and Rescue was mobilized on some roads to drain the water.
While some criticism is being target towards the Home Ministry due to the flooding, the Housing Minister, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu tweeted tonight saying that the first and second phase of the storm water drainage project has been successful.
