MDP raises concerns about the lack of ID numbers on Voter’s List

Largest opposition party, MDP, has raised concerns about the Voter’s List for the Local Council Election set for January lacking the National Identity Card numbers.

Talking to the press at the MDP office today, the Deputy Chairperson, Ali Niyaz said that the lack of ID card numbers on the Voter’s List is a major concern. He said that the concerns have been raised with the Election Commission’s election council.

Regarding the issue, Member of the Election’s Commission, Ahmed Akram said that the complaints have been received and the decision to remove the ID card numbers from the list was made to protect the privacy of the voters. But he said that discussions are underway to change it.

Other concerns raised by MDP include pending payment to the political parties and the short, 14-day duration to apply for candidacy in the election. Elections Commissions said that application for candidacy in the Local Council Election would be opening on 24 October.

MDP said that their campaigns for the election are set to begin early next month and the candidates would be announced by then as well.
