Maumoon to appeal Yameen’s court-mandated overtake of PPM

Leader of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom is pressing to appeal the Civil Court decision to authorize President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s control over PPM.

A PPM council member loyal to Maumoon informed “Sun” that the former President was working on filing an appeal over the ruling.

“The work is being done. It will be appealed as soon as possible,” said the PPM council member.

Civil Court granted Yameen – the advisor of PPM – will full control over the party, and asked that he ensure PPM was run in accordance with its constitution and rules and regulation in its ruling this Sunday morning.

The court rendered the advisory committee set up by Maumoon for his reform agenda null. And ordered that an emergency PPM council meeting be held within the next 24 hours.

The legal battle comes after months of conflict within the party due to conflicts between Maumoon and Yameen, with most members siding with either Maumoon or Yameen.

Maumoon, on Saturday, removed two council members appointed by him who had shifted loyalties, replacing them with those loyal to him including the former Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer.
