Tests reveal the 50 kg substance found from Dh. Maaenboodhoo on August 30 was not ambergris – as initially thought.
Mohamed Abdul Gayoom, 55, had found the substance which he thought was ambergris washed ashore on the beach while out for a walk.
One of his children spoke to “Sun” this Sunday and said that tests from abroad confirmed the substance was not ambergris.
An ambergris found from Komandoo in December, 2015 was sold for USD 37 per kilo. Mohamed would have been able to make MVR 28.5 million if he had been able to sell off the substance at the same rate.
