President of F. Atoll Council resigns from the Council

Idris Abu Bakr, President of F. Atoll Council has resigned from his presidential office at the Council as well as membership of the Council.

Idris said that he resigned yesterday, and that he had already submitted the letter of resignation to the Council.

“I have decided to resign due to a huge issue. I do not want to talk about it at the moment, but I will declare the reasons behind my decision later”, said Idris, who belongs to the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

A member of F. Atoll Council, in which the ruling MDP holds majority, said today that Idris resigned as the President of the Council and also as member to escape from disgrace at the face of an imminent motion of no confidence vote against him planned by members of the Council. The member declined to provide any further details of the problems among members of the Council.

A vote of no confidence was cast against Idris some months ago, and back then he won it by a very narrow margin.
