Police start investigations into the incident at Huraa

The Maldives Police Services has begun investigations into the tragic incident that occurred at K. Atoll Huraa three days ago, in which Principal Ali Nazim and four students of Hiriya School drowned to death at sea, while they were in the island on an outing to do the work of a Fisheries Science project.

The Police began their investigations yesterday morning around 10 o’clock at Huraa.

A team from the Police went to Huraa and monitored the Youth Camp area where 32 students of Hiriya School, with their Principal and 8 expatriate teachers, camped for the project. The Police also created a scene at the lagoon at the coast of the Youth Camp area, in which the incident of drowning took place.

Three persons from Huraa who had participated in the efforts to rescue the students swimming in the lagoon were questioned by the Police. Before they left Huraa yesterday, the Police informed Huraa Island Council that further visits to the island would be made during the investigations.

Ahmed Shiyam, Sub-Inspector of Police and Police Media Official, said that that the Police would go everywhere and question everyone in order to unearth all the details of the incident that had shocked the whole country into sorrow and tears.
