Special Envoy of Commonwealth visits Mahloof in prison

Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of Commonwealth to Maldives, Dr. Willy Mutunga has made a visit to Maafushi Prison today to meet with the MP for South Galolhu constituency, Ahmed Mahloof currently serving time.

MP Mahloof was sentenced to ten months and 24 days after being convicted on two counts of obstructing the Police duties. He was sentenced to four months and 24 days on the first count and six months on the second count.

The wife of MP Mahloof, Nazra Naseem told Sun Media tonight that the Commonwealth Envoy, Dr. Mutunga visited the prison and met with Mahloof.

She told Sun Media that Dr. Mutunga sought information on his prison sentences and the appeals of his prison sentence at the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.

The UNWGAD has scheduled the MP’s case to the session on 21-25 November.

The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of Commonwealth to Maldives, Dr. Willy Mutunga arrived in Maldives on Saturday on his second visit to the country. So far he has met with the Foreign Minsiter, Dr. Mohamed Asim, the Human Rights Commission of Maldives, Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Areef.

He has also met some of the officials of the opposition coalition, Maldives United Opposition (MUO). The delegation that met with the Commonwealth Envoy included Ministers of the MUO Shadow Cabinet and the MP for the North Mahchangolhi constituency, Mariya Ahmed Didi.

Sources say that Dr. Mutunga would conclude his visit and leave the country tomorrow.
